Had To Laugh At This

“There is nothing in which the birds differ more from man than the way in which they can build and yet leave a landscape as it was before.” - Robert Lynd

Why did I have to laugh, you ask?  The birds aren’t doing much building right now - not yet, but they are being very enterprising.  It has been snowing here all day, and they have been digging dilligently all day at the window bird feeder to remove the snow and at the platform feeder to get down under the snow to get to their food.

Seems, that once they find their food source, they just keep on coming back.  However, I will not agree on this day that they have left the landscape as it was - just not so at all!

It Is Essential

snowmanIn the wake of today’s blizzard our fine feathered friends are having a difficult time finding natural food sources.  PLEASE make sure your bird feeders are full or in desperation as I was forced to do, just get some food out there for them.

We have over 3 feet of snow on the ground - it is over the top of my pedestal bird bath!  There are drifts as high as 6 feet in some places.  I dug a path to the platform bird feeder and filled it right on top of the snow.  The only other feeder I could get to today was the window bird feeder which doesn’t hold a lot, but even a little will do in this messy weather.

Please make sure that you at least put a tray of food outside as their natural sources are completely covered with snow and quite frozen.  They will love you for it and you can be delighted by thier constant presence.

A Snow Scene

mourningdoveIt it an incredible beautiful morning.  There is snow outlining every branch of every tree.  It is pure white from the newly fallen snow we had overnight.  I just love mornings like this, when the coffee seems to taste better because I can see the beauty in the day.

There is a mourning dove on the stoop in front of me staring up at the window bird feeder where two purple finches are dining.  I hope you enjoy your day as much as I am going to enjoy mine.

Happy Birds

dark-eyed-juncoWell, I got my husband’s bug and didn’t make it here last night.  I was otherwise occupied.  It has literally been years and years since I was hit with a gastrointestinal bug - I hope it is years and years until the next time.  Not fun at all.

We woke up to some snow this morning.  It’s just a squall and won’t last, but I love the way the dark-eyed juncos swarm around in the snow.  Their common nick name is snow birds, but I prefer to call them my happy birds.  They are swarming the patio and covering the window bird feeder.  And of course the cats are loving it.  The snow birds always make me smile and I needed a smile this morning.  They always look like they are smiling and hopping and skipping.  That’s why I call them happy birds.

As I Recuperate

Well, I can’t go out, but I got this shot of the window bird feeder through the sliding glass door.  Seemed like every time it was busier, I couldn’t get to the camera in time, but you have the picture!!

Counting My Blessings Again

blessings Where does the news media get the stuff they report, anyway?  I sometimes think they are living on another planet.  They are doing their jobs, I guess.  I just wonder how long it will take them to get it right.  They keep telling us that the econmy is improving.  Can’t prove that by me.  I spent time over the holidays serving meals to a room full of 164 people who didn’t know where their next meal was coming from.  They still don’t.  The holidays are over and their nightmare is still happening.  More than half of the 160 people we fed didn’t know where they were going to sleep that night.  Some of them were families with children.

Last year we served 81 people.  That means the numbers have more than doubled in 12 months - but wait, the economy is improving - isn’t it?  Actually, we are feeding them again next week and I am told that there will be 181 people.  That is a 10% increase in less than one month.

I have not found new full time employment, so next year, I could even be one of them.  I doubt it, but I bet not too many of them expected to be where they are either.  I am sitting in my heated great room with my laptop on my lap feeling quite grateful, counting my blessings with worries?  Yes, but I do know where my next meal will come from.

My fine feathered friends are well fed  right now too.  For how long, I cannot tell you.  I am doing this one day at a time.  But I was thanked royally this afternoon by two house finches who were looking through the window as they enjoyed their feast at the window bird feeder.  Yes, I am counting my blessings again.  I hope you do every day too.  There are indeed a growing number of our friends and neighbors who have some challenges to get through yet before taking on an attitude of gratitude.  Thank you, Lord.

Wishing You Joy

holiday-fireplaceAs Christmas day approaches, I wanted to take a minute to wish you all the joy you can imagine.

Find joy in seeing a carpet of white snow on the ground.  Share joy with friends, relatives and loved ones.  Feel joy at the sound of children’s laughter and their excitement.  Experience joy by remembering that jesus is the reason for the season, and whatever doesn’t get done, doesn’t need to be done.

I am thankful to all of you for reading my ramblings.  You too can find joy when  you have a window bird feeder.  It’s the next best thing to having them right  in the house with you.  Today there were 3 finches enjoying a little snack while I found much joy in watching them.

Have a peaceful, joy filled, healthy and memorable Christmas!

OK, I Am Bragging

cardinal-maleIt’s a bit later than usual, but you know me by now.  When something cool happens, I have to share it in the hopes that my excitement will wear off on you.

It is a sad fact that the winter bird activity when compared to that of the summer, can be fairly drab from time to time.  Needless to say, I do everything I can to keep my back yard one the most happening places in the minds of every bird for miles around.  And, whenever those efforts pay off, you just have know.

My window bird feeder is in my kitchen window, so when it has a visitor, I am standing directly in front of the feathered guest.  And today, there was a male cardinal in it for a long visit and a good meal of sunflower seeds.  I have never been so close to the male cardinal.  So, yes, I am bragging and hoping he is a frequent visitor this winter.  What a treat and what a way to turn a dull cloudy day into a sunshiny happy one!

A Birdy In The Window

window-bird-feederThere are a lot of days that fly by, and I mean that literally, that I have only a fleeting moment to enjoy the fine feathered friends that I invite in so many ways to dine and play and roost and nest in my back yard.  I do admit, that every chance I get, I am peeking at the bird feeders, to view the activity, and I assure you that I spend every minute possible making sure that those bird feeders are full of thier favorite foods, the ports are clear and clean.

The binoculars help to bring them more up close and personal, but until I can swing the price of a good camera to capture them permanently, I have decided to make a small investment in a window bird feeder.

One of my very first feeders was a veey small window bird feeder, and it was almost having the birds right in the room with me.  It will probably drive my cats out of their minds, but I expect to enjoy the window bird feeder.  I will keep you posted on the activity and progress.
